It is very individualized. Every woman has many, various reasons of decision-making. How long does she want to stay on maternity leave? Personal reasons exist, as well as family and the attitude of the employer. I would never allow myself to give any one advice. I, too, was on maternity leave for 3 years with each child. And, plus, I had my husband’s mother, who helped me with the children, and I was then able to focus on some project, even during my maternity leave. This served to help me not loose contact with reality and to refill my energy.
My wish is for all women to have the possibility to devote themselves to their children. So, that children don't have to pay the price for our ambitions or for the pressure of employment. I believe that spending time with your children isn’t about the quantity, but rather the quality. And should women have to leave their children and go back to work after all, they should surely be able to dedicate enough time to their children outside of work. And, most importantly, the cleaning can wait……...
